Identify the covering, then decide

The cleaning solution is sprayed into the fibre and drawn off again in the same movement, followed by a pass with clear water. Separate clean and dirty water tanks are a precondition, otherwise dissolved soil is put straight back in.
Stain treatment by type of stain
Coffee, tea and red wine are tannin stains and are treated acidically through to oxidatively, blood and milk are protein and need cold water with enzymatic support, grease and ballpoint need solvent. Work goes from the outside inwards, blotting rather than rubbing.
Drying and residual moisture
After extraction, air movement is brought in to help, seat cushions are stood on edge and the residual moisture is checked. Depending on the upholstery and the room air, four to twelve hours is realistic, longer with a dense foam core.

W, S, WS and X are not a recommendation but the manufacturer's statement of the permitted cleaning method: a covering marked X may only be vacuumed. Clean it wet regardless and you get rings, sometimes shrinkage at the seams, and with viscose additionally dull, stiff patches, because the fibre loses a great deal of its strength when wet. If the label is missing, the decision is made by fibre test and a concealed trial beforehand — and if only vacuuming and a solvent treatment can be justified, we say so in advance and not afterwards.
Rings and rapid resoiling come from residues
If cleaning agent stays in the fabric, it migrates to the surface with the capillary water as the piece dries and settles as a ring at the drying boundary — that is the classic ring which only becomes visible the following day. Overdosed upholstery shampoo additionally leaves a slightly tacky fibre that binds dust: after a few weeks the upholstery is greyer than it was before cleaning. That is why dosing to the manufacturer's figure, a clear-water pass and thorough extraction matter more than the quantity of chemistry.
Urine in upholstery is a salt problem
Urea and uric acid salts penetrate as far as the foam core, part of it crystallises and is only soluble in water to a limited degree; because these salts are hygroscopic, the smell returns with every warm, humid spell even though the surface looks clean. What works is flushing through with extraction over several passes, combined with an enzymatic treatment that needs contact time — enzymes do not work in minutes. If the core is saturated over a larger area, we say plainly that replacing the cushion or the core is the better use of the money than a third attempt.
