Snow storage and clear gullies
The snow goes onto the agreed area, not onto the carriageway and not onto hydrants, manholes or fire service access routes. Road gullies, cellar steps and light wells stay clear, so that meltwater can run off instead of becoming a sheet of ice overnight.
Roof overhang, icicles and snow cornices
§ 93 para 2 StVO requires snow cornices and ice formations to be removed from the roof and the place to be made safe until that is done. We work only with fall protection and only where the access allows it; everything else goes to a specialist roofing firm.
A gritting record with date and time
Every clearing and gritting round is recorded with the time, the area and the material used, and with a photograph on request. In a dispute what counts is not that the site was cleared but that it can be evidenced.
Underground car park ramp, parking deck and barrier area
The head of the ramp, the turning area, the barrier and the drainage channel are cleared and treated with a product that the coating and the waterproofing will take. Chippings are kept away there, because under tyres they become an abrasive and they block the channel heating.
Steps, handrails and accessible routes
Step edges, landings, handrails and the ramp to the accessible entrance are dealt with first and gritted more densely than the open area. The work is done with hand equipment, because machine width and step geometry do not go together.
Roof terrace, emergency overflow and outdoor escape route
On walkable roofs, escape routes, door areas and accesses are kept clear, and roof outlets and emergency overflows freed of ice and slush. Clearing is done only down to the agreed depth of snow and always with fall protection.
In Linz it is the bridges, riverside paths and open areas along the Danube that freeze over first through fog and frost, often with no precipitation at all. On industrial access roads heavy traffic carries the chippings away within hours, which is why the treatment there is repeated more often rather than applied thickly once. For work on industrial premises a briefing, a pass and fixed routes apply; the parking decks at office locations are run without chloride, because otherwise the coating goes in the wheel track.

Gritting beforehand works; gritting afterwards barely does
De-icing salt needs moisture in order to form a brine — spread onto ice that is already bare and cold, it initially just sits on top and is carried away by traffic. Applied before the event, it prevents the bond between ice and surface, and pre-wetted salt adheres better than dry material. On top of that comes the temperature limit: sodium chloride practically stops thawing below around minus ten degrees, and there only the abrasive action of chippings carries, or a product based on calcium or magnesium chloride, which works at lower temperatures and is accordingly used selectively. That is why with us it is the forecast that decides the timing, and not the view out of the window in the morning.
On a parking deck and a ramp both are wrong: salt and chippings
A parking deck is a building element with waterproofing and a coating over reinforced concrete. Chlorides travel through cracks and joints as far as the reinforcement and promote corrosion there, which bursts outwards from within; that only becomes visible years later as spalling and rust staining. Chippings, in turn, become an abrasive under tyres, grind the coating away in the wheel track and block channels and ramp heating. So the right approach is mechanical clearing, a chloride-free alternative such as a formate-based product only where it is needed, and keeping the channels clear. We define these areas specifically before the season rather than gritting them along with everything else.
Ice that keeps coming back in the same place has a structural cause
When a surface is slippery again every night even though it has been cleared and gritted, the water usually does not come from the sky: a leaking gutter or a broken-off downpipe, condensate from an outdoor unit, a blocked floor gully, meltwater from a badly placed snow store, or a fall from the garage exit towards the pavement. No gritting interval helps against a running source, because a new layer of ice keeps forming overnight — and in the event of a claim that is exactly the point at which the question is asked whether the cause was known.
