Road salt greys the pile and holds moisture
Chlorides crystallise out white as they dry, attract humidity and keep the zone permanently damp and grey; added to that is grit, which acts mechanically on the fibre like an abrasive. It can only be dissolved with water and thorough suction, because otherwise the salts stay in the pile. More effective than any spring clean is a barrier matting zone of sufficient length: most of what comes in falls in the first few metres past the door, and that is precisely the zone we clean more often in winter.
Too much water dissolves the backing, not the dirt
Tufted stock is bound with latex, broadloom is laid with adhesive, and older carpets have a secondary backing of jute. Extraction that is too wet breaks that bond: blisters, waves and delamination follow, and jute shrinks and pulls the surface together. Such damage cannot be repaired; it ends in replacement. That is why the measure is the residual moisture and not the quantity of water, and why we measure at the end instead of relying on the feel of it.
Interim cleaning preserves the fibre; deep cleaning only rescues it
Wear on a carpet is mostly mechanical: sand trodden in cuts the fibre with every step, the pile loses its structure and takes dirt on faster afterwards. That is why regular, thorough vacuuming is the single most effective measure, and encapsulation interim cleaning the second — it binds the remaining dirt into crystals that come away with the next vacuuming.
