Stove glass and stove ash each have their own rule
The brown to black film on the fireplace pane forms when the combustion temperature is too low and the wood too wet; it bakes on and will not come off with glass cleaner. Finely sieved, cold ash on damp newspaper is the right means for it: it is alkaline and acts as a mild abrasive, while cream cleaner and steel wool scratch the glass-ceramic pane and destroy the sealing cord. The ash itself is the second point: embers can survive in a bed of ash for days, which is why it is taken out only after several days and put exclusively into a metal container with a lid — never into a plastic bucket and never into the paper bin. We work that way and we say so, because this is one of the most common causes of fire in a dwelling house.
Limescale is a question of water hardness and of timing
The harder the water, the faster limescale is deposited after every shower; as long as the layer is thin it comes away with a mildly acidic agent and little mechanical work. Left in place, it combines with soap residue to form lime soap, and on shower glass something then happens that cannot be undone: in combination with standing moisture and alkaline cleaners the glass surface is attacked and stays dull, even once there is no limescale left on it. That is why the short, regular rhythm is the right answer in the bathroom, and not the big push twice a year.
The black spot in the silicone joint sits in the material
Moulds grow into the joint, because the plasticisers in the sealant serve as a nutrient base and the joint stays permanently damp. An agent applied to the surface bleaches out the pigment, but the network remains in the silicone and is visible again after a few weeks — the only lasting remedy is to cut the joint out and set a new one. We bleach and keep the joint in order, but we say clearly when it is due for renewal; the replacement itself is a job for the plumber or runs through our partner firm Skyline Bau GmbH.
