Urine odour sits in the joint, the textile and the screed, not in the air
Urine consists for the most part of urea and urate salts. The urea is broken down by bacteria into ammonia — that is the pungent smell — while the urate salts crystallise out and become active again with any moisture. That is exactly why a surface smells fine briefly after mopping and bad again the next morning: the crystals sit in the silicone joint at the foot of the WC, in the skirting junction, in the bottom edge of the door leaf, in the upholstery and, if the joint was ever leaking, in the screed beneath. The two effective approaches also work against each other: uric scale and limescale need an acidic sanitary cleaner at a low pH, while the organic remainder needs an enzymatic preparation that works only in the neutral range and with a long dwell time. Both at once cancel each other out, so the work is done one after the other with an intermediate rinse. Where the finding lies under the joint or in the screed, we say so with a photograph: there the joint has to be renewed, and fragrances only postpone the problem by a few hours.
Slip resistance in an assisted bathroom can be cleaned away
Tiles in assisted bathrooms and showers have a tested slip resistance: in shod areas to the classes R9 to R13, and in wet barefoot areas to the assessment groups A, B and C. That property lies in the surface structure, and the structure can close up. Limescale from hard water, soap and skin grease residues and above all film-forming maintenance products fill in the profile; the surface then looks the same but behaves like a smooth tile, and in an assisted bathroom that is a falls matter, not a cosmetic one. Conversely, too harsh an approach abrades the structure. The correct answer is an interval of acidic descaling, thorough rinsing afterwards and no maintenance layer at all — not the next coat of shine. The second point is loose rubber mats: they are meant to give grip, but they travel under the foot when soap residue lies underneath. We lift them at every pass, work beneath them and put them back only onto a dry surface.
Shower heads and tap aerators are a drinking water matter in a care home
Hot water between roughly 25 and 45 degrees is the growth range for legionella, and they are not transmitted by drinking but by fine spray — that is, precisely where showering takes place. ÖNORM B 5019 covers the design, operation and monitoring of central drinking water heating installations and lists facilities with people in care as an area with heightened requirements. The temperature regime, sampling and the flushing plan remain with the operator and the building services department — what the cleaning contributes is nevertheless material: shower heads, shower hoses and aerators are descaled or replaced as specified rather than wiped on the outside, because the deposit sits inside. Added to that is stagnation: a room that stands empty for weeks after a resident leaves has an unflushed branch pipe. Where the home provides for it, empty and reserve rooms are flushed during the pass and that is noted with a date — it is a line in the record and replaces no sampling.
