In dental treatment the contaminated area is larger than the chair
The turbine, the ultrasonic scaler and the air polishing unit produce an aerosol of coolant water, saliva and blood. The coarse fraction settles within roughly one and a half to two metres around the treatment position; the fine fraction stays airborne longer and settles on the light shade, the monitor, the top edge of cabinets, the door handle and the floor. Two things follow for cleaning. The radius belongs in the plan, not only the handle surfaces of the unit, and the sequence runs from top to bottom, because otherwise freshly worked surfaces take dust from above again. Settling time belongs with it: anyone who starts wiping immediately after the last treatment distributes airborne aerosol. So the room is ventilated first, or the ventilation is left running, and the treatment room comes after the waiting room in the sequence, not before it. The spectrum of activity of the agent follows the practice hygiene plan; we work with what is laid down there and observe the contact time across the whole surface.
On the training floor the problem is sweat, not dust
Sweat is salty and slightly acidic. It dries on handles, weights, padding and equipment frames into a film of salt, and salt plus residual moisture is the standard situation for pitting corrosion: on chrome-plated dumbbells, on guide rods and on the welds of equipment frames, spots appear that can no longer be cleaned away. That is why surfaces are wiped dry after mopping, and why water alone is not enough — the film of salt needs a surfactant, but no abrasive, because the chrome layer is thin. The second point is the mats. Exercise mats made of PVC or cellular rubber contain plasticisers, and alcohol-based rapid disinfectants draw those plasticisers out: the surface first goes dull, then brittle, then cracked — and a cracked mat can no longer be brought under hygienic control, because no agent reaches the flank of the crack. Mats are therefore worked with alcohol-free preparations approved for the material and with a proper contact time, not with the spray head from the treatment room.
In the X-ray room the approval decides, not the agent
Lead aprons and thyroid collars consist of a soft heavy-metal rubber layer in a textile cover. Folding and creasing creates cracks in it that cannot be seen from outside and that cancel the protective effect at exactly that point — which is why they are stored hanging, worked hanging and never laid over the back of a chair. Cleaning uses a mild, alcohol-free agent, because alcohol and aggressive surfactants harden the coating. The lead glass in the viewing window is softer than ordinary glass and scratches even with an abrasive pad, so soft cloths only and no scrapers. On the equipment itself the manufacturer's approved list applies: sensors, detector plates and equipment arms have coated plastic surfaces on which the wrong agent causes dullness and hairline cracks, and a detector is not a consumable. Whatever has to be tested and documented at intervals stays with the operator; we report damage to an apron, a screen or a cable in writing, because otherwise a finding like that only comes to light at the inspection.
