Cleaned mineral render that has dried out sufficiently will take a water-repellent treatment based on silane or siloxane; a substrate that is still damp or still covered will not. Depending on the weather the drying time is several days, and the effect rests on the agent penetrating the capillaries rather than sealing them. Anyone who wants cleaning and protection in the same appointment gets one of the two done badly.
Pigeon droppings are never worked dry
Dried droppings break down into dust when swept, blown off or treated with high pressure, and that dust is the real reason for the protective measures: it can carry pathogens and spores, and it is breathed in. Work is therefore done with pre-damping, collection, disinfection and protective equipment, and the waste is disposed of separately. The uric acid in the droppings also attacks zinc, paint and mineral render, which is why after years of infestation the spot is damaged in the material and not merely dirty.
Old brick and natural stone have a protective skin that can be lost
Historic facing brick, sandstone and limestone carry a denser, weathered outer zone at the surface that protects the stone. High pressure, hard brushes and sandblasting take it away with them; afterwards the stone absorbs more water, soils faster and weathers further. In protected stock the work is therefore done with poultices, at low pressure or with soft media in a vortex process, in agreement with the responsible authority — and always on the test area first.
