On parquet and laminate, a steam cleaner is the fastest route to damage
Steam introduces heat and moisture at the same time — exactly the combination wood-based materials cannot take. With laminate the core board swells at the joint edges, and that does not go back; with sealed parquet the lacquer lifts at the edges of the joints, water then draws into the joint flank and the top layer cups. Oiled parquet loses its oil in patches. The right approach is mist-damp mopping with a product approved for the covering and drying the edge joints immediately; oiled floors are re-oiled at intervals rather than cleaned harder. We record which covering is in which room and work accordingly.
The smell after a holiday sits in the trap
Every drain has a water seal that closes off the sewer. If a flat goes unused for two or three weeks, that water evaporates in the floor drain, the washing machine connection or the rarely used guest WC, and the sewer smell stands in the room — not a cleaning problem but a water level. Refilling is usually enough. If the smell remains, it often sits in the overflow channel of the basin, where a biofilm forms that no cloth can reach, or in the washing machine drain hose without a high loop. We refill the traps, work the overflows specifically and report it when the cause lies in the plumbing.
Milky shower glass is usually no longer limescale but the glass itself
If hard water dries on the pane for years, the alkaline residue attacks the glass surface: silicates are leached out and the surface roughens microscopically — glass corrosion. The deposit on top can certainly be removed with an acidic agent and dwell time; the cloudiness underneath stays, because it is no longer a deposit but geometry. The only lasting remedy is to squeegee after showering and not let the limescale dry on; existing corrosion needs glass polishing.
