Alcohol-based agents dissolve bookbinding glue, attack the colours on cloth and leather bindings and make laminated film ripple. A sprayed surface dries; the damage to the binding remains. What is effective against transmission is the hand hygiene of the users, not treating the items. We therefore disinfect contact surfaces on tables, machines and handles and leave the books dry.
Fluctuation does more harm than a single high reading
Paper and glue take up moisture and give it off again; every change works inside the material and over time loosens bindings and creates ripples. A stable room climate is therefore more important than a reading that looks good for a moment. Obstructed or clogged ventilation grilles and blocked radiator recesses are an underestimated cause of such fluctuation — keeping them clear is preservation of the holdings and belongs in the cleaning plan.
Dust on books is not only dust
In reading rooms the deposit consists to a large extent of skin flakes and textile fibres, in other words organic material. That is food for silverfish and for mould as soon as moisture is added.
