Heels and trainer soles leave elastomer scuffing that adheres in the covering under pressure and warmth: that is not dirt which can be dissolved but material on the surface, and so neither more water nor a stronger cleaner helps. It is taken off mechanically with a soft hand pad or an eraser disc, and on larger areas with a machine and a suitable pad. Solvents and strongly alkaline products, by contrast, do more harm than good on plastic coverings — they dull the wear layer, and after that the next streak holds even better.
