Perforated doors, plinth panels, fan slots and cold aisle components are worked dry and antistatically, with dissipative equipment. Compressed air and blowing out are excluded; work is exclusively by extraction.

With early fire detection and gas extinguishing, the coordination is part of the work
Aspirating smoke detectors draw room air in through a pipe system and detect the smallest particles — which is exactly why they react to stirred-up dust, and any cleaning work near them can produce an alarm. The damage does not lie in the alarm itself: if an inert gas extinguishing system discharges, the outflow creates a sound pressure which can cause read and write errors on hard disks, up to and including failure, and on top of that come pressure relief, refilling the extinguishing agent and the interruption to operations. That is why the detector group concerned is switched out with the operator before work starts and switched back in afterwards, both with the time in the record. We do not work on the pipe system itself — that belongs to the maintenance company.
Fibre offcuts are invisible and do not belong in a broom
Splicing and terminating produces fibre offcuts a few micrometres in diameter; they are barely visible, break off easily and penetrate the skin on contact, where they are difficult to remove. So there is no sweeping and no wiping by hand: collection is with a fine particulate filter vacuum and adhesive tape, disposal in closed, labelled containers. The second reason is technical: a single particle on a connector end face is enough for measurable additional attenuation or an interrupted link, which is why connectors, couplers and patch panels are handled exclusively by the network engineers. We clean the room, not the connection.
Dust costs cooling capacity before anything fails
A layer of dust on intake grilles, fan grilles and heat sinks acts like insulation: the fans run faster, the power consumption rises, the component temperature rises with it, and processors throttle back their clock speed. That is precisely why blowing out with compressed air is the worst solution there is — the dust leaves one device and is drawn in again by the neighbouring rack. Work is exclusively with extraction through a fine particulate filter and with pick-up cloths, and the open points in the cold aisle, that is to say missing blanking panels and open floor cut-outs, belong to the same subject.
