The matt anti-reflective layer and the grease-repellent coating are very thin; high-percentage alcohol, glass cleaner containing ammonia and abrasive cloths attack them patchily and the image goes milky — a change that cannot be brought back. The work is done dry or barely damp with soft microfibre and decalcified water, and anything sprayed goes onto the cloth, so that no liquid runs into the frame gap or the connectors. The same principle applies to keyboards, with the addition that they are unplugged for cleaning and not soaked.
Water on oak can turn black
Oak, walnut and some veneers contain tannin: if tannin comes together with iron and moisture — a bucket handle, steel wool, a screw, the metal edge of a trolley — a blue-black iron-tannate discolouration forms that goes into the fibre and cannot be washed off. Oiled timber is therefore worked only barely damp and re-oiled at an interval, lacquered timber neutrally and without film-forming dressing agents, and nothing metallic is set down on the top. Fabric-covered acoustic elements and felt panels are exclusively vacuumed dry, because wet work there draws tide marks and the covering ripples.
