Barcode scanners, photoelectric sensors, reflectors and camera systems in conveyor technology work with scattered light; a film of dust on the read window lowers the first-read rate, and the installation answers with jams, re-reads and misrouting, without anyone looking for the cause in the dirt. The windows are usually polycarbonate or acrylic and react to cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia with stress cracking and dulling, which is why they are worked dry with a soft cloth and only with water where necessary.
