Alcohols and quaternary ammonium compounds work well against enveloped viruses and many bacteria. Against non-enveloped viruses such as noro, rota, adeno and enteroviruses that is not enough — there an agent with demonstrated virucidal effect is needed — and against spore formers such as Clostridioides difficile sporicidal substances are needed, in practice usually peroxides or peracetic acid. Quaternary ammonium compounds additionally have the property of building films on floors which pick up dirt and turn the floor grey by degrees. That is why the agent is chosen according to the pathogen and the substrate and not according to what is in the store — and it is never mixed: acid with chlorine releases chlorine gas, chlorine with ammonium compounds cancels the effect on both sides.
Fogging does not replace wiping
Aerosolised room disinfection only works on exposed surfaces that have been cleaned beforehand: whatever lies under dust, grease or protein is not reached, and organic loading inactivates the active substances. Then there are the preconditions: the room has to be empty and sealed, ventilation and doors closed, and after the working time a defined ventilation or waiting period is needed before anyone may go in again.
