The range of pathogens is wide and well documented. The decisive sentence for practice is this: the risk rises with how dry the material is and with every mechanical movement. Dry sweeping, scraping, blowing off with compressed air or a pressure jet without wetting down first create an aerosol that stays in the air for hours and distributes itself through the whole part of the building. This is why the material is always wetted down with a wetting agent first, then taken off by hand and put into sealed sacks — and only after that is anything cleaned at all.
The protective equipment is not for appearance
Work is done with respiratory protection of filter class P3 — as a particle-filtering FFP3 mask or a half mask with a P3 filter, and for longer work in confined interiors with a full mask or a powered air-purifying respirator, because otherwise breathing resistance and heat in the loft bring the wearing time limit into play. Added to that are a single-use protective suit with a hood, protective gloves, close-fitting eye protection and overboots. Taking the equipment off matters just as much as putting it on: it happens in the set order in the designated zone, the suit is disposed of as contaminated waste, and working clothing does not go home with anyone. Nobody eats, drinks or smokes in the zone. Legally this is not a matter of discretion: work with biological agents is governed by worker protection law, in Austria through the Biological Agents Ordinance — with a hazard assessment, defined protective measures and demonstrable instruction of the staff. Anyone removing droppings with a dustpan and a nuisance dust mask saves nothing but shifts the risk onto people and onto the flats in the building.
Why pressure washing is the most expensive mistake
A pressure jet looks like the fastest answer and is the worst. It atomises the droppings into an aerosol, putting precisely the material at issue into the air. It drives water into the roof covering, tile interlocks, masonry and insulation, where it stays for weeks and comes back later as moisture damage and mould. It flushes droppings into gutters, inlets and gullies, which then block. And it takes substance away: lime render, historic pointing mortar, soft brick and conglomerate stone lose material that does not come back. What is right is the opposite order, with little energy and more time: wet down at low pressure with a wetting agent, remove mechanically by hand, clean with a limited quantity of water, then disinfect — and do so with a product that suits the substrate and the range of pathogens, because against spores it is oxidative preparations with sufficient contact time that work, not alcohol. Finally, dry under control. One point belongs in honest advice: pigeons are faithful to a site, and a remediated surface without protection is occupied again within a few weeks. Which is why the deterrence belongs in the same operation and not in the next job.
