On the shaded side and under planters, a film of algae and lichen sits within the structure of the surface. Water alone only lightens it and it is back within a season. Rust spots on paving come from metal, not from dirt
Steel furniture feet, coasters, plant-pot grilles, screws and metallic dust from the air leave behind fine iron particles which, with moisture, draw into the surface as a rust spot. Alkaline cleaners get none of it out. What is needed is an acidic iron remover with contact time — on limestone and conglomerate it must not be used, and there the work is mechanical and finished with a polish. In paved and stone surfaces the joint is not there for decoration: it holds the slabs apart and leads water into the drainage layer.
