Untreated abachi, hemlock and spruce are cleaned mechanically: benches and backrests brushed off, sweat rims that have soaked in sanded fine along the grain, and the cabin then heated through. Surfactants, oils and fragrance additives stay outside, because at operating temperature they evaporate off again.
Steam room, benches and jet panels
On tile, acrylic and heated seating there is limescale and skin grease. Acid is used only where the substrate will take it — not on marble, limestone or travertine benches, where a product approved for natural stone in the neutral range is used instead.

Warm, standing water is the real hygiene subject
In the barefoot area it is filamentous fungi and wart viruses that carry the transmission risk, and they sit not in the middle of the tile but in the biofilm of the channel, the joint intersection and the underside of the grating. That is why cleaning comes first and disinfection only afterwards — on dirt the active substance is used up and the dwell time runs to nothing. With everything that generates an aerosol the mains water comes into it as well: after a longer shutdown, lukewarm water stands in showers, steam generators and whirlpool lines, and in Austria the duties of operation and monitoring for that are described in ÖNORM B 5019. We descale shower heads and jet panels and report what plainly has no flow through it; the flushing programme and temperature control remain with the operator.
Infusion concentrates are solvents and a cause of slipping
Essential oils such as eucalyptus, menthol and citrus act on plastic and lacquer like a mild solvent: control panels go matt, seals swell, acrylic develops stress cracks. Whatever goes beside the stone bowl stays as a greasy film on steps and tiles, and wet that is distinctly more slippery than the covering itself — a neutral cleaner will not remove it. Poured undiluted onto hot stones, the concentrate cokes in the stove and then comes through with every infusion. We take these residues off with a degreaser, keep the area around the stove in the plan, and report when a panel has already been attacked.
Chlorinated air attacks stainless steel and the ceiling
Above a whirlpool or a pool there is an aerosol of pool water and disinfection by-products. The typical swimming pool smell comes not from the chlorine itself but from chloramines, which form when chlorine meets sweat, urea and cosmetics — a rise in that smell indicates loading, not cleanliness. For the components above it, that atmosphere is the risk: on highly loaded stainless steel parts in pool halls, stress corrosion cracking is a well-known failure pattern, and chloride-bearing cleaners accelerate it.
