Dust on books is not only dust
In reading rooms the deposit consists to a large extent of skin flakes and textile fibres, in other words organic material. That is food for silverfish and for mould as soon as moisture is added. The pass over the shelving is therefore preservation of the holdings and not appearance — and that is why it belongs in the plan and not on the wish list.
Near the holdings, damp is the greater risk
Paper takes up moisture from the air, and above around 60 per cent relative humidity mould in the holdings becomes likely. There we work without mist and with almost dry cloths. And we do not ventilate in warm, humid weather: summer air brings more water into the room as it cools than it carries out.
The book edge is never wiped damp
On the edge the dust lies loose. Damp it becomes a grey haze that draws into the paper fibre and stays permanently. The work is done on the closed book, with a vacuum and a soft brush, always away from the spine so that nothing is pushed between the pages.

Yes. The team is permanently employed and knows the building, the access arrangements and the routines. Cover is arranged in advance and named, and it works from the building log, not from a verbal handover.

The contract is terminable monthly. There is no minimum term and no automatic extension by the year.
