The holiday window, with classrooms cleared out
During the summer holidays we do what cannot be done in term time: seating and desks out, old maintenance films stripped off completely, the floor built up again, high-level surfaces, curtains, radiator fins, light diffusers. The timetable is coordinated with the school authority's trades, because otherwise the deep clean ends up ahead of the decorating.
A school event, a ball or an open day
Before the event, the assembly hall, the corridors, the sanitary areas and the glass; afterwards an additional round concentrating on sanitary areas, spilt drinks on the floor and waste. With lessons starting the next morning, the night in between is the only window there is.
Examination periods and the school-leaving exams
During examination weeks, no machines run in the wings concerned and no work is done in the corridors outside them. Examination rooms are prepared the evening before; the rest of the building follows a shifted plan.

Chalk and toner dust are taken up dry, not wiped
Blackboard chalk consists of calcium carbonate or calcium sulphate. The dust is alkaline and takes up moisture — brought into contact with water it smears into a grey haze that clings to the board, the chalk ledge and the window sill, and is dragged along again on the next round. The correct order is the reverse: take it up dry with a dust-binding cloth, empty the channel and the ledge, and only then work with a fine damp film. Toner dust from printers and copiers behaves even more awkwardly, because it is thermoplastic: with warm water and friction it softens and fixes itself into the flooring or the carpet, and after that it cannot be removed. Spilt toner is therefore taken up cold and with a vacuum whose filter class holds the fine fraction, not with a damp cloth. With whiteboards the mistake is a third one: all-purpose cleaner leaves a surfactant film in which the dry-wipe marker takes hold — the board becomes harder to wipe clean from week to week. Whiteboard surfaces are therefore worked only with the agent intended for them, or with alcohol, and without any maintenance additive.
School sanitary areas are a question of frequency and of drainage
In a long break, several hundred children pass through the same facilities within a few minutes. One round after the end of lessons cannot reflect that, and more product is no substitute for an interim round — which is why contact surfaces, dispensers and floors in sanitary areas belong in a break-time interval. The persistent smell that is typical here has a technical cause as well: urinals and drains develop uric scale, a hard deposit of calcium and magnesium phosphates that builds up in the trap and in the drain line. Alkaline cleaners do not dissolve it — on the contrary, they fix the organic fraction. Uric scale needs an acidic sanitary cleaner with sufficient contact time, or an enzymatic preparation in the neutral range, and either one only works if it reaches the drain rather than merely running over the ceramic. One safety point that is taken seriously in a school cleaning store: acidic sanitary cleaner and chlorine-based preparations must not be used one after the other without rinsing in between, because chlorine gas is produced. The plan therefore states which agent belongs in which room, and the cleaning store stays locked.
Specialist rooms have their own rules, and two of them are safety rules
Wood dust arises in the workshop, and fine wood dust is not merely unpleasant: it is combustible, capable of explosion when airborne, and certain wood dusts are classed as carcinogenic. It is therefore taken up with a suitable industrial vacuum — dust class M — and never blown off with compressed air or swept together; shavings trays and extraction containers are emptied without putting the dust into the air. In the art room the problem is the drain: plaster water sets in the trap and makes it unusable within a few months, and acrylic paint forms a film in the basin and the pipework. Plaster residue is taken out of the basin dry, and brush and paint water belongs in the settling container provided, not in the wash trough — we tell the school that, because otherwise the cleaning is held responsible for it. In the chemistry room the rule is to work around the substances: chemical residues, assembled apparatus and the inner surfaces of the fume cupboard stay with the teaching staff, and we work the outer surfaces, the floor and the worktops once released. DIN 77400 is widely used as a guide to scope and frequencies in schools; what is binding in Austria is what the school authority's schedule of services says, and that is what we set the plan to.
