An empty flat smells because the traps dry out
If a flat stands empty for two to three weeks, the water in the trap of the shower and the floor drain evaporates and drain smell stands in the room. That is not a dirt problem and airing will not clear it. We flush the drains through at every changeover, and before arrival after a longer vacancy.
The washing machine is a frequent source of smell
Washing always at low temperature with liquid detergent builds up a biofilm in the lint filter and the door seal that scents the fresh laundry along with it. A hot cycle without a load and a cleaned filter deal with that. If the machine is in the property, we take it into the cycle.
