A veterinary practice needs a different spectrum of activity from a human one
The most persistent pathogens in the veterinary field are non-enveloped viruses — parvoviruses in dogs and cats, caliciviruses — and fungal spores, from Microsporum for example. This group survives for months on surfaces, in joints and in textiles, and against it alcohol-based rapid disinfectants and quaternary ammonium compounds are not sufficiently effective. What is needed is a product with declared activity at the level of limited virucidal PLUS („begrenzt viruzid PLUS“), that is to say against non-enveloped viruses: in practice that means oxidative preparations such as peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorite, or aldehyde-based products, in each case with the full contact time — and contact time means wet time: the surface has to stay damp for the whole duration, which on porous concrete, in channels and on gratings is a question of how much is applied and not of good intentions. Two limitations belong with that. First, material compatibility: hypochlorite attacks stainless steel and aluminium, peracetic acid aluminium and non-ferrous metals — which is why the work is planned by substrate and rinsed off after the contact time. Second, the organic load: faeces, blood, urine, feed residues and hair consume the disinfectant before it reaches the pathogen. Without thorough pre-cleaning the disinfection is largely ineffective, and that is exactly where the first mistake is made when savings are sought.
Animal hair is the carrier, not the dirt
In a practice a hair is never just a hair: it transports fungal spores, mites, flea dirt, skin flakes and allergens, and it takes an electrostatic charge. That is why it travels everywhere — into floor joints, cable trunking, chair castors, ventilation grilles and the cooling openings of equipment, where it can lead to overheating. For the sequence of work that means: vacuum dry and completely first, with a filter stage that actually retains the fine fraction, and only then work damp. Wiping over loose hair forms balls of hair and thereby spreads spores and flea dirt over the whole area instead of taking them up — that is the most frequent reason why a practice does not appear clean despite daily cleaning. The second point is the fit-out: textile upholstery and carpeted areas in the waiting room are the largest reservoirs of hair and are hard to get under control hygienically. We say so in the preliminary assessment, work such surfaces with brush vacuuming and, where needed, with spray extraction, and recommend wipeable surfaces at the next refurbishment.
A smell in a veterinary practice has three different causes
First, urine. Cat urine is the most difficult case, because besides urea and urate salts it contains sulphur-bearing breakdown products — hence the characteristic sharp smell, which does not disappear with water and an all-purpose cleaner but returns with any moisture. It needs an enzymatic preparation with a long standing time that breaks down the organic residue, and no perfume. Second, fear and anal gland secretion: it is greasy and adheres to plastic, artificial leather, the surfaces of scales and the walls of boxes; there, cleaning with a surfactant is what helps, because a disinfectant alone does not dissolve the film of grease and in any case has no effect underneath it. Third, the drain: hair, feed and faecal residues rot in channels, traps, hair strainers and floor gullies, and the smell then comes out of the hole and not off the surface — to which is added the dried-out trap in rarely used stable gullies, through which sewer gas flows in. We therefore treat smell as a question of location: drain, joint, textile, substrate — worked through one after another, instead of masking the room.
