Disinfection targeted, not across the board
In a nursery, cleaning is the rule and disinfection the exception — but applied consistently in the right places: the changing mat and the area around it after every change, sanitary areas after use, toys after mouth contact, contact surfaces when illness is going round. Blanket disinfection in the group room, by contrast, brings no benefit and leaves residues on precisely those surfaces the children reach with mouths and hands; that is why, once the contact time has elapsed, we work over with water wherever children get to. The spectrum of action matters as well: the typical nursery infections — hand, foot and mouth, noro, rota — go back to non-enveloped viruses, and alcohol-based rapid disinfectants are not sufficiently effective against those. There it takes an agent listed as virucidal with the full contact time, and a toy that cannot be wiped goes into the laundry or the dishwasher rather than into a spray mist.
Sand is an abrasive and it determines how long the floor lasts
The sand from the sandpit and the outdoor area is quartz-bearing and angular. Under the soles of shoes it acts like fine abrasive paper: linoleum, PVC, design coverings and parquet pick up micro-scratches, the surface goes dull, and dull surfaces take up dirt more readily than smooth ones — the floor looks dirtier even though the work is done just as often. Past a certain point the only remedy is a deep clean with re-dressing, which costs a multiple of a regular clean. That is why the most effective measure is not more mopping but catching the sand at the door: a barrier matting zone of sufficient length, entrance gratings that are lifted out regularly and cleaned underneath, and in the entrance area always vacuuming first and working damp afterwards. Mopping wet over loose sand is the quickest route to a dull floor.
Linoleum and a sports floor need opposite care
Linoleum is widespread in childcare settings because it is robust and made from renewable raw materials. Its surface is oxidised and sensitive to strongly alkaline agents and to standing water: above a pH of about 10 the surface is attacked, and moisture at the seams makes the covering swell and the joints stand up. Work is therefore done barely damp with a neutral to mildly alkaline agent, and the wear layer is dressed with a polymer dispersion rather than being polished bare. In the movement room the opposite applies: the sports floor has a tested slip behaviour to EN 14904, and every care film shifts it. A waxed gym floor is not well cared for, it is a falling hazard. That is why one regime of care never runs across all the rooms in a building, but a plan for each covering — and we set down with it which room gets which formulation.
