Pool material treated differently
Liner pools tolerate neither hard brushes nor a permanently low pH, tiled pools need work on the joints, and polyester and GRP pools no abrasive products, because of the gelcoat layer. What is used is settled at the pool once the condition has been assessed.
Salt electrolysis, UV and dosing equipment
The electrolysis cell, quartz sleeve, UV lamp, dosing hoses, injection points and measuring cells are checked, descaled or reported for replacement. A scaled-up cell produces less without reporting a fault — it only shows up in the water.
Whirlpool, jets and air channels
The air and water channels behind the jets are warm, barely flushed through and therefore the most critical point in the installation. They are flushed by a suitable method, the water is changed and the filter cleaned or replaced.

Coping stones with a scale line, timber and WPC decking, slip resistance around the pool, the entry ladder, the handrail and the fins of the heat pump. On the outdoor unit, every layer of dust and leaves costs heating output.
Skimmer, pre-filter, bottom drain
The skimmer basket and the pump pre-filter are emptied and rinsed, and the bottom drain is checked for flow. That is where most cloudiness begins, because a half-blocked intake halves the circulation rate without anyone noticing.
Filter and backwashing
The sand filter is backwashed until the sight glass runs clear, followed by the rinse cycle; cartridges are taken out and cleaned. The filter pressure is noted, because a rise of roughly two to three tenths of a bar above the starting value is the actual reason to backwash.
The high rainfall continuously dilutes the water chemistry and at the same time brings in nutrients, which is why pools here turn faster after wet spells than in dry locations — the measurement after the rain matters more than the measurement after the sun. The season is shorter and the period under cover longer, which favours biofilm in the cover pit and between the slats. In hotels and guest houses with pools for guests the record-keeping duties of pool hygiene law apply, and the earlier frost brings winterising forward.

The chlorine lock caused by cyanuric acid
Stabilised chlorine in tablet or granular form brings in cyanuric acid with every dose, and that acid stays in the pool and does not break down. At a low concentration it protects the chlorine from breakdown by UV; if it rises above roughly a hundred milligrams per litre it binds the chlorine so strongly that the measurement shows free chlorine while the disinfection has practically stopped — that is why some pools turn despite high readings. The only effective remedy is a water change, not more chlorine; that is why we measure the cyanuric acid and not just the chlorine. For public and commercially used pools the requirements of the Austrian pool hygiene legislation apply independently of this; with private pools it remains a question of running the plant properly.
Biofilm sits wherever no water is being circulated
Bacteria form a slime layer of polysaccharides which disinfectants only attack at the surface — which is why biofilm is present even in a pool with correct chlorine levels as soon as flow is missing. The typical places are the cover pit, the overflow channel, the balance tank, the skimmer flap, the floor jets and the air channels behind massage jets; warm pipework with little flow is additionally where Legionella multiply, and massage jets and showers produce exactly the aerosol that is then breathed in. What works is always the combination of opening the layer mechanically, flushing and a shock treatment afterwards — one product on its own is not enough. For commercially used installations the requirements of Austrian pool hygiene law apply to this; privately it remains a question of how the plant is run.
Water that is too soft attacks the pool, water that is too hard comes out of solution
The calcium carbonate and carbonic acid equilibrium depends on pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and temperature: if the sum sits too low, the water is hungry for lime and dissolves jointing mortar, concrete surfaces and tile adhesive, which shows up as a sandy joint and a rough wall. If it sits too high, calcium carbonate precipitates and settles as a hard deposit on the waterline, the liner, the heat exchanger and the electrolysis cell — and a coated heat exchanger heats measurably worse. With liner pools there is the further point that a permanently low pH drives the plasticisers out of the liner and leaves it brittle and wrinkled. That is why we measure not only chlorine and pH but also alkalinity and calcium hardness, and set them in that order.
