Skimmer, pre-filter, bottom drain
The skimmer basket and the pump pre-filter are emptied and rinsed, and the bottom drain is checked for flow. That is where most cloudiness begins, because a half-blocked intake halves the circulation rate without anyone noticing.
Filter and backwashing
The sand filter is backwashed until the sight glass runs clear, followed by the rinse cycle; cartridges are taken out and cleaned. The filter pressure is noted, because a rise of roughly two to three tenths of a bar above the starting value is the actual reason to backwash.
Waterline, walls and floor
At the waterline sits a film of sun oil, skin grease and dust which does not come off with chlorine but mechanically, with a suitable waterline cleaner. Floor and walls are brushed and vacuumed, liner pools with a soft brush, tiled pools harder.
Measure the water, do not estimate it
pH, free and combined chlorine, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and, where stabilised chlorine is used, the cyanuric acid are determined photometrically. Test strips are good enough for a trend, not for deciding on dosing.
Plant room and dosing
Pump running time, seals, backwash valve, heat exchanger and, where fitted, the dosing and measuring equipment are checked. The running time is matched to the pool volume so that the contents pass through the filter several times over the course of the day.
Winterising and recommissioning
In autumn the water level is dropped below the inlet nozzles, pipework and pump are drained, frost protection is set and the cover goes on. In spring the empty pool is deep cleaned, filled, the values are set and the season starts with a shock chlorination.

Start of the season in spring

Green water after heat or a thunderstorm
Heavy rain and pollen bring nutrients and spores into the pool, and heat accelerates chlorine consumption. That is a visit of its own with shock chlorination, flocculation and repeated backwashing.

Without brushing and backwashing, biofilm settles on the walls and at the waterline. The earlier it is dealt with, the less chemistry it takes.

The pH decides whether chlorine works at all
Chlorine acts in water as hypochlorous acid, and the proportion in that form depends on the pH: at around 7.2 most of it is in the effective form, at 8.0 only a fraction. Adding more chlorine at a high pH raises the reading but barely raises the disinfection performance — and at the same time it loads the liner and the heat exchanger, because at a high pH and with hard fill water, scale comes out of solution. That is why the work always goes in this order: first set the total alkalinity as a buffer, then the pH into the range 7.0 to 7.4, then the disinfection.
Cloudy water is usually a filter problem
Filter sand cakes together over the years through grease and scale; the water finds channels through the bed and runs past the filter performance, while the pressure stays deceptively normal. Typical accompanying errors are too short a pump running time — the pool contents should pass the filter several times a day — and a backwash without the rinse afterwards, which carries sand back into the pool. The finest cloudiness, which the filter does not catch, is brought together by flocculation and then vacuumed off; the sand should be changed after about three to five years.
The chlorine lock caused by cyanuric acid
Stabilised chlorine in tablet or granular form brings in cyanuric acid with every dose, and that acid stays in the pool and does not break down. At a low concentration it protects the chlorine from breakdown by UV; if it rises above roughly a hundred milligrams per litre it binds the chlorine so strongly that the measurement shows free chlorine while the disinfection has practically stopped — that is why some pools turn despite high readings. The only effective remedy is a water change, not more chlorine; that is why we measure the cyanuric acid and not just the chlorine. For public and commercially used pools the requirements of the Austrian pool hygiene legislation apply independently of this; with private pools it remains a question of running the plant properly.

Yes, free of charge and without obligation. It is the only way to quote seriously, so we treat it as part of the offer, not as a service to be paid for.
Does the same person come every time?
Yes. The team is permanently employed and knows the building, the access arrangements and the routines. Cover is arranged in advance and named, and it works from the building log, not from a verbal handover.
