Hair ropes together with silicones, fats and limescale into a solid plug, which ordinary drain cleaners do not dissolve but saponify, making it tougher still — and strongly alkaline caustic attacks chrome and aluminium traps and can damage the seal. It is cleared mechanically: empty the strainer, open the trap and clear it out, and use a drain snake if needed. The hair strainer is a wearing part, to be replaced rather than patched.
Salon linen needs temperature, not just detergent
Towels take up conditioners, silicones and skin oils. On low-temperature programmes that grease stays in the fibre, it turns rancid, smells musty after a short time and the towels stop taking up water. What is needed is an adequate temperature with a full-strength detergent and an occasional hot programme for the machine itself, because a biofilm forms in the lint filter and the door seal as well. Colour towels are run separately, because oxidative colour bleeds.
Hair colour has to come off the same day, or it stays
Oxidative colours only develop their colour inside the material: the small dye precursor penetrates plastic, silicone joints and porous tile grout and is turned there by the oxidising agent into the large colour molecule, which can no longer be washed out. While fresh, the drop can be taken off with water and a mild cleaner; after a day, usually only a bleaching treatment with a compatibility test will help, and later nothing will.
