Nave, pews and stone floor
Sweeping, vacuuming with a fine filter, pews by hand, stone floor neutral and with little liquid. On lime-bound floors nothing acidic is used.
Candle soot on walls, piers and vaulting
Soot is taken off dry first: a soft brush, a vacuum held at a distance, a latex sponge. Whether any damp work follows at all is decided by a test area.
Wax on stone, timber and textiles
Allowed to harden, taken off mechanically with a soft tool, residual shadows only by an agreed method. On valuable floors and pews we work only within the scope of what has been released.
Furnishings, altar, sculpture and gilding
These surfaces are dusted dry only, and only where that has been released. Gilding, polychromed timber surfaces and paintings belong to the conservator, not in a cleaning item.
Stained glass, leaded glazing and windows
Dusted dry from the inside, without any cleaning agent and without pressure on the lead or the paint layer. Protective glazing and frames on the outside are assessed separately.
Porch, tower access, gallery, pigeon droppings and the record
Droppings are damped down before removal and worked with respiratory protection, never swept dry. Every visit is documented with the date and photographs.

Candle soot is taken off dry, not wiped
Soot particles are extremely fine and greasy; if water is added, it binds them into a veil that is drawn into open-pored limestone, sandstone and lime render and stays dark there — a deposit becomes a discolouration. Professionally, therefore, work runs in this order: soft brush, vacuum with a fine filter held at a distance, latex sponge dry, and only after that does a test area decide whether a poultice or a damp method comes into question at all. On polychromed, painted or gilded surfaces our work stops before the surface: the bole and the chalk ground beneath the gold leaf are water-soluble, and a damp cloth takes the gold with it.
Heating up too quickly blackens more than a year of use
Warm air rises along walls and vaulting and carries soot and fine dust with it; if the church is heated strongly before a service, strong convection arises and the deposit is carried across the cold building elements. At the same time the relative humidity falls, and timber, the organ and polychromed furnishings crack — in conservation practice the recommendation is therefore to heat slowly, in the order of one kelvin per hour, and to hold the relative humidity in the middle range of around 45 to 60 per cent. That is not a cleaning service, but it explains why the same blackening returns after every winter; we record the finding with photographs so that the parish can pass it on.
Wax on stone is removed cold, not warm
Candle wax is drawn into open-pored limestone and sandstone; heat makes it liquid and drives it deeper, and what remains is a greasy rim that stays visible as a dark patch even once no wax is lying on the surface. The correct approach is: let it harden completely, take it off mechanically with a soft spatula or a piece of wood, draw the remainder out of the stone with an absorbent poultice, and on valuable floors work only with the conservator. Acidic household remedies have no place on lime-bound surfaces: they etch the surface dull, and that spot is afterwards not soiled but altered.
