Before a customer audit or a works visit

Sprinkler heads and fire detectors have clearance rules
A sprinkler head needs a clear spray area and must not be painted over, taped over, covered or bent; mechanical contact can damage it or set it off, and a system triggered in high-bay racking means water damage in the goods. Smoke detectors, in turn, respond to dust thrown into the air — blowing off with compressed air in the racking area is therefore the quickest route to a false alarm with a fire brigade turnout. We vacuum dust off rather than displacing it, agree work near detectors with the fire alarm control centre beforehand, and have the group concerned isolated and put back into service on completion. Isolation and reinstatement are entered in the record with the time.
Oil absorbent is pick-up, not the end of the matter
An oil spill is picked up with absorbent; after that, the bound material is hazardous waste and belongs in a labelled, suitable container — not in the general waste, not in the yard bin and not swept into the nearest channel. What stays in the surface is the film of oil in the capillaries: on cement screed and uncoated concrete, oil is drawn in and can only be brought back out with an emulsifier, a contact time and vacuuming, and in part a shadow remains visible. For a later coating that is the decisive point: it adheres only to an oil-free, open substrate, which is why preparatory cleaning and a check of the substrate come before the paint and not after it.
Dust in a hall is first of all a fire and explosion question
Many organic and metallic dusts form an ignitable mixture with air, and deposits on beams, crane runways and ducts are an additional fire load that is thrown up into the air by a first ignition. For areas with a hazardous dust atmosphere, zones 20 to 22 apply; there Ex-rated vacuums with conductive equipment are prescribed, and for quartz-bearing or carcinogenic dusts dust class H to EN 60335-2-69 is the lower limit, while for most other mineral and wood dusts it is class M. Blowing off with compressed air is the classic mistake: it removes nothing, it displaces and raises the dust — precisely the condition one wants to avoid.
