Artificial leather needs the opposite rule to a textile seat
What looks like leather in an auditorium is frequently a fabric coated with PVC or polyurethane. Alcohol, solvents and alkaline degreasers draw the plasticisers out of the PVC layer: the surface goes hard, shines unevenly and cracks at the seam and the front edge — and the damage only shows months after the wrong treatment. Genuine, pigmented leather tolerates a mild, pH-neutral cleaning and needs re-fatting at intervals. The most frequent discolourations come neither from popcorn nor from drinks but from hand cream, sun oil and denim dye: denim blue that has migrated onto a light-coloured covering is not a stain that comes out. That is why the type of covering is recorded before an agent is chosen.
Popcorn fat is a film of grease, not a crumb problem
Popcorn is usually prepared in vegetable fat, and that fat is carried into the auditorium as a fine film: onto the floor, the armrest, the cup holder and the textile. There it oxidises over days and weeks and turns rancid — the musty smell in an auditorium comes out of the textile and out of the joints, not out of the air, and a fragrance product merely lies over it. Fat dissolves with a mildly alkaline cleaner and a contact time; in upholstery it takes pre-treatment and vigorous vacuuming, because every remaining trace binds dust again. That is why the seating belongs in a cycle of its own and not in the turnaround clean.
Too much water in upholstery makes rings, not cleanliness
The foam core of a cinema seat takes up liquid deeply; as it dries slowly, dissolved dirt travels back to the surface with the water and redraws the edge of the stain — after two days it is back, often larger than before. Where the construction contains natural fibres, a brownish discolouration can also strike through, and that is no longer soiling. The correct approach is: pre-treat the stain, dry foam or a small quantity of liquid, vacuum intensively, air movement until dry — the seats have to be dry by the next performance, otherwise the auditorium smells worse than before.
