Coatings and plastics do not forgive the standard cleaner
The screens of televisions, tablets and monitors have anti-reflective and oleophobic layers which are broken down by cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia — what remains afterwards is a patchy, milky image that can no longer be polished out. High-gloss kitchen fronts are lacquered or foil-wrapped surfaces: an abrasive pad, or a worn microfibre cloth with a grain of sand in it, puts in fine scratches that remain permanently visible in raking light. Acrylic glass on shower screens and furniture reacts to alcohol with stress cracking, and rubber seals and synthetic leather are made brittle by it. In a household, moisture is a question of quantity
Four people put several litres of water a day into the room air through breathing, showering and cooking, and a clothes airer indoors adds another two to three litres per load. That moisture condenses on the coldest surface, and in an older building that is the window reveal, the roller shutter box or the corner of an external wall behind a cupboard with no gap. We report it instead of painting over it, because cleaning takes away the growth and not the cause — and where absorbent layers are affected, that belongs in mould remediation with measurement.
The most common household damage is the wrong pH on stone
Marble, limestone, terrazzo and many window sills consist of calcium carbonate and react with acidic products — vinegar cleaners, descalers, WC cleaners — by dissolving the surface. The result is not a stain that can be cleaned off but a dull, etched patch, that is to say a loss of material which only goes away by grinding and refinishing. Conversely, linoleum and oiled timber floors do not tolerate strongly alkaline deep cleaners, because there the surface saponifies.
