Chalk is an alkaline powder and not ordinary dust
Climbing chalk is at its core basic magnesium carbonate: very fine-grained, mildly alkaline and strongly water-attracting. If it gets wet, a smeary paste forms that is slippery on a hard covering and dries on in joints, and a single wet round over dry chalk leaves the surface worse than before. Sweeping brings it back into the room as fine dust, from where it goes into the ventilation and the filters — that is why it is vacuumed off first, where there is a lot of it with a dust class M vacuum and a fine filter, and only then drawn over barely damp with a neutral cleaner.
Holds can take water, but not heat and no solvents
Climbing holds are predominantly polyurethane with a mineral filler; hot wash cycles, steam and solvents attack the matrix, the hold goes glassy smooth, distorts, or loses its fit at the bolting face — and a distorted hold is no longer a cleaning problem. Professionally they are soaked in hand-warm water with a mild, neutral cleaner, worked with a brush, rinsed clear and dried completely before the hold goes back on the wall; the hold manufacturer's specification takes precedence over any house routine. The wall panel itself stays dry: wood-based panels with a textured coating swell where water gets into the drilling and the panel joint, and the t-nut then sits less well.
Textile safety equipment is not cleaned along with the rest
Ropes, harnesses, slings and quickdraws are polyamide and polyester products and are managed as personal protective equipment; cleaning agents, disinfectants, fabric softener and temperatures above the manufacturer's specification alter the fibre, and the loss of strength cannot be seen from the outside. Care of such items runs through the centre's equipment management, following the manufacturer's instructions and the requirements for dynamic mountaineering ropes to EN 892 — not through the cleaning trolley. The same thinking applies to the mat cover: we work pH-neutral, because alcohol and solvents attack the plasticiser in the cover and the surface then tears open at seams and edges.
