Access, escort, zones
Before the first visit it is settled which zones are entered — server room, raised floor void, UPS and battery room, ante-room, store — and who escorts. The list of names is part of the access arrangement, and equipment and cabling are not operated.
Floors in the server room
Raised floor panels are worked at a defined residual moisture, with products that leave no film. Waxes and care coatings are not used, because they alter the dissipative properties of the covering and break open under roll cages.
The raised floor void
Opening is done panel by panel with a panel lifter to an opening plan, and vacuuming is with a fine particulate filter; cable trays, concrete dust and airborne fibres are taken up. Every panel goes straight back into its place, so that the airflow in the room stays right.
Racks and intake areas once released
Perforated doors, plinth panels, fan slots and cold aisle components are worked dry and antistatically, with dissipative equipment. Compressed air and blowing out are excluded; work is exclusively by extraction.
Ante-room, store, unpacking area
Cardboard is the strongest source of fibres in the surroundings of a data centre, which is why unpacking stays outside the clean zone. Barrier matting zones, the airlock and the routes are maintained on the same cycle as the server room itself.
Record and interval
Every zone is documented with date, personnel and photograph, and anything conspicuous is reported rather than dealt with. The cleaning interval follows the input and the occupancy, not the calendar; as a guide for the degree of cleanliness, the particle classification to ISO 14644-1 is used.

Dust costs cooling capacity before anything fails
A layer of dust on intake grilles, fan grilles and heat sinks acts like insulation: the fans run faster, the power consumption rises, the component temperature rises with it, and processors throttle back their clock speed. That is precisely why blowing out with compressed air is the worst solution there is — the dust leaves one device and is drawn in again by the neighbouring rack. Work is exclusively with extraction through a fine particulate filter and with pick-up cloths, and the open points in the cold aisle, that is to say missing blanking panels and open floor cut-outs, belong to the same subject.
Zinc whiskers under the floor panel
Electroplated zinc undersides of older raised floor panels form fine, needle-shaped zinc crystals over the years. They break off when disturbed, travel with the airflow into the equipment and can cause short circuits there — in the event of damage the cause is hardly ever found, because the trigger is micrometres in size. That is why suspicious panels are not brushed, ground or swept dry but carefully vacuumed, and the findings reported with photographs: the decision on replacement or coating lies with the operator.
Wax and care films destroy the dissipative properties
Dissipative floor coverings only work as long as their surface resistance stays low; any layer of wax or polymer applied on top insulates and turns the person walking over it into a charge carrier. With dry room air — in winter the relative humidity in server rooms often falls below thirty per cent — that is enough for discharges which do not destroy components immediately but pre-damage them: the failure comes weeks later and is then no longer attributed to it. That is why we clean with film-free, antistatically acting products and wear a wrist strap and dissipative footwear when working at an open rack.
