A gutter has exactly one job: to carry rainwater from the roof to the downpipe in an orderly way. Once leaves, needles, moss and the fine sludge of washed-off tile dust fill it, the water looks for another route – over the edge and down the facade, back under the roof covering, or through a blocked downpipe into the base of the wall. The cleaning itself is simple manual work. The hard part is reaching the gutter safely and without damage. That is why we have our own rope access technicians in Vienna.

01. Why a gutter should not wait for damage

You rarely see a full gutter from the street. You see the consequences – and they usually cost more than the cleaning:

Water on the facade

When the gutter overflows, water runs down the facade. It leaves dark streaks, render and paint come loose, and window sills and cornices stay wet.

Backflow under the roof

Standing water is pushed under the first row of tiles by the wind and reaches battens and attic. Damp patches on the ceiling often appear weeks later.

Frost in the gutter

Wet leaves hold water. When it freezes, the ice expands, bends gutter brackets and splits soldered seams. In spring it drips where it used to be watertight.

Blocked downpipes

A plug in the downpipe pushes the water back up. It escapes at joints, soaks the masonry at the base and can reach the basement through the drain connection.

Weight and growth

A gutter full of wet soil carries several kilos per metre. Seedlings even take root in old deposits and block it further.

Nesting sites

Full, quiet gutters attract pigeons and insects. Droppings and nesting material make the blockage worse and the cleaning harder.

02. What gutter cleaning includes

We work along the gutter metre by metre and only stop once the water runs freely again:

Gutters cleared by hand

Leaves, moss, sludge and tile grit are lifted out, not pushed into the downpipe. Finally the gutter is wiped clean.

Valleys and hoppers

Where two roof slopes meet or water drops into a hopper, debris collects most. These spots are cleared one by one.

Downpipes flushed

Every downpipe is tested with water from above. If it does not drain, we free the blockage with a spiral or pressure flushing.

Leaf guards and screens

Leaf baskets, gutter strainers and guards are removed, cleaned and refitted.

Visual check

Loose brackets, open seams, shifted tiles or rust are noticed during the work. We photograph and report them – repairs are done by your roofer or tinsmith.

Disposal

All material is bagged, lowered down and taken away. Nothing ends up in the courtyard, on the pavement or in the drain.

03. Rope instead of scaffolding: how we reach the gutter

How we reach the gutter decides effort and cost. Scaffolding just for cleaning is almost always too expensive:

Rope access from the roof

On tall buildings our technicians abseil from the roof or attic and work along the eaves. No scaffolding, no lifting platform in the street.

Ladder or cherry picker

On low buildings a secured ladder or a cherry picker is enough. We check this beforehand so that no more equipment arrives than needed.

Secured to EN 795

We work from tested anchor points, with two independent ropes and always in pairs – one on the rope, one securing.

Area below secured

We cordon off the pavement or courtyard below the work area so nobody can be hit by falling material.

04. Buildings where we clean gutters

Almost every type of building can be found in Vienna. Each has its own weak points:

Period apartment building

High eaves, often hanging gutters with long downpipes in the courtyard. Rope access is usually the only economical solution here.

Large residential complexes

Many metres of gutter, several staircases, often flat roof sections with outlets. We clean in sections so residents hardly notice.

Detached and terraced houses

Usually reachable by ladder or cherry picker, but often right next to trees. Here gutters fill fastest.

Commercial buildings and halls

Long gutters, internal drainage and flat roof outlets. A blocked outlet on a flat roof is just as dangerous as a full gutter.

Listed buildings

Copper gutters, decorative metalwork and delicate cornices. We work without high pressure and without tools that scratch surfaces.

05. How often a gutter should be cleaned

There is no fixed rule. What matters is what grows around the house and how the roof is built:

Once a year

For most houses one cleaning in late autumn, after the trees have dropped their leaves, is enough.

Twice a year

If trees stand right next to the house, a second cleaning in spring makes sense – that is when blossoms, seeds and pollen fall.

After storms and hail

Strong wind carries branches and leaves onto the roof. After such an event it is worth a look before the next rain.

Before winter

A clear gutter can carry away meltwater. A full one forms icicles that become a hazard above pavements.

06. How gutter cleaning works

From the first photo to the final report in six steps:

1

Photos and address

Send us the address and, if you have them, photos of roof and gutter. That is often enough for a first assessment.

2

Assessment or site visit

We clarify how to get up there: rope, ladder or cherry picker, and where we can anchor.

3

Written price

You receive the price in writing, with scope and date. Anything not listed is not charged.

4

Date and cordoning off

We agree the date with you or your property manager and secure the area below the gutter.

5

Cleaning and flow test

Gutters, valleys and hoppers are cleared, every downpipe is tested with water.

6

Photos and report

You get before and after photos and a list of any defects we noticed.

10. Frequently asked questions about gutter cleaning

How can I tell that my gutter is full?
Typical signs are water spilling over the edge when it rains, dark streaks on the facade, plants growing out of the gutter and a downpipe that barely runs during rain. By then it should be cleaned.
Is scaffolding needed for gutter cleaning?
Almost never. Our own rope technicians reach the gutter from the roof on ropes; on low houses a secured ladder or cherry picker is enough. Scaffolding just for cleaning would cost many times more.
Do you offer gutter cleaning outside Vienna?
No. We clean gutters in Vienna only, because that is where our rope technicians work. Our other cleaning services are available in Vienna, Graz, Linz and Salzburg.
Do you repair gutters as well?
No, we clean. Loose brackets, open seams or rust are documented with photos and reported. Repairs are carried out by a roofer or tinsmith of your choice.
What happens to the leaves and dirt?
We collect everything in bags, lower it down and take it with us. Nothing is thrown into the courtyard and nothing is flushed into the downpipe or drain.
Is the downpipe cleaned too?
Yes. Every downpipe is tested with water from above. If it is blocked, we clear it with a spiral or flushing as far as possible from the top.
When is the best time for cleaning?
Usually late autumn, once the leaves have fallen. If trees stand right next to the house, we also recommend a visit in spring.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. We need access to the roof or attic if we anchor there. We arrange this beforehand with you or your property manager.
What if it rains or storms on the day?
We do not work on ropes in strong wind, thunderstorms or icy conditions. We move to the next suitable day at no extra charge.
