Removing limescale and urine scale: what works, what it destroys – and when professionals help

Removing limescale and urine scale: freshly cleaned bathroom with washbasin and taps

Bling Bling GmbH · Updated November 2026 · approx. 9 min read

In short: Removing limescale and urine scale takes an acidic cleaner and contact time – not force. Limescale dissolves in mild acids such as citric acid; urine scale needs stronger sanitary cleaners. But acid never goes on marble or limestone, never together with chlorine products and never undiluted on dry grout. The harder the water, the faster the deposits return – noticeably faster in Linz and Graz than in Vienna.

What are limescale and urine scale?

Limescale is the white to grey deposit left behind when hard water evaporates. It consists mainly of calcium carbonate and builds up on taps, shower screens, tiles, shower heads and in the toilet at the waterline. Over time it binds soap residue and dirt and turns darker.

Urine scale is a hard, yellowish-brown deposit in toilets and urinals. It forms when components of urine combine with the minerals in water and crystallise – especially under the rim, at the waterline and in urinal traps. Urine scale is more porous than limescale, gives bacteria a foothold and is the most common cause of urine odour in otherwise clean toilets.

Neither is simply a sign of poor cleaning; it is a question of water hardness, usage and interval. In an office toilet with a hundred visits a day, urine scale forms faster than in a private bathroom.

Why limescale and urine scale should be removed regularly

  • Hygiene: rough deposits are ideal surfaces for bacteria to cling to. Where urine scale sits, even daily wiping does not stop the smell.
  • Odour: in offices, schools and restaurants, urine smell is the most frequent complaint about washrooms – and almost always a urine scale problem.
  • Technology: scaled aerators and shower heads reduce flow; urine scale in traps narrows drains until they block.
  • Protecting value: the longer a deposit sits, the stronger the product needed – and the greater the risk to surfaces.

Water hardness: why Linz scales up faster than Vienna

How quickly limescale comes back depends directly on water hardness. The utilities publish their values:

CityTotal hardness according to the utilityWhat it means in the bathroom
Viennamostly 6–11 °dH, in some districts at times up to 16 °dHcomparatively soft: descaling every few weeks is usually enough
Grazabout 14–17 °dHhard: shower screens and taps need weekly attention
Linzabout 16–21 °dHhard: limescale rims form quickly, squeegee after showering
Salzburgabout 9–18 °dH, depending on supply zonevaries widely: check the value for your address with the utility

How to remove limescale and urine scale properly

The order follows the basic rules of every sanitary clean: top to bottom and clean to dirty. In the bathroom that means mirrors, shelves and taps first, then washbasin and shower, toilet and urinal last – with separate, colour-coded cloths for the toilet that are used nowhere else.

  1. Check the material: tiles and sanitary ceramics tolerate acid, chrome in moderation. Marble, travertine, limestone, some enamels and gold-plated or powder-coated taps do not. If in doubt, test on a hidden spot.
  2. Pre-wet: dampen tiles and grout with clear water. Wet grout absorbs less acid – this protects the cement mortar.
  3. Apply and leave to act: acidic cleaner on the deposit, on vertical surfaces as a gel or applied with a cloth. Contact time according to the manufacturer – usually a few minutes. For urine scale under the rim: lower the water level in the toilet first so the product is not diluted.
  4. Loosen mechanically: with a sponge, soft brush or non-scratch pad. No steel wool, no scouring cream on chrome and glass.
  5. Rinse thoroughly: remove acid residue with plenty of clear water. Residues keep attacking grout and metal.
  6. Dry and check: polish taps and glass dry, check for rims against the light. Stubborn urine scale often needs two passes.

Which product for what?

  • Light limescale on tiles, glass, taps: mild acidic bathroom cleaner, citric acid dissolved in water.
  • Heavy scale crusts, shower heads, aerators: unscrew and soak in descaler rather than scrubbing.
  • Urine scale in toilet and urinal: acid-based sanitary deep cleaner, in professional use for example with sulphamic or phosphoric acid. These products are effective but irritant – gloves, safety glasses, ventilation.
  • Never: use acid and chlorine cleaners at the same time or one right after the other. Toxic chlorine gas can form.

Prevention: keeping the bathroom free of limescale for longer

The best descaling is the one you do not need. Three habits cut the effort considerably: first, squeegee the shower screen and tiles after every shower – what does not evaporate leaves no limescale. Second, wipe taps dry briefly with a microfibre cloth. Third, treat the toilet regularly with a mild acidic toilet cleaner so that no layer builds up under the rim. In offices and businesses, a fixed cleaning plan with a descaling interval and checks of the urinal traps help. In buildings with very hard water, a softening system can make sense – a plumber can judge whether it pays off.

How working with us runs

How working with us runs in four steps: enquiry, site visit, fixed price, start1Enquiryphotos and size2Site visiton site or video3Fixed pricein writing4Startfixed team

Enquiry: send us photos of the washrooms, the number of toilets, urinals and washbasins, and tell us whether you need a one-off deep clean or routine care. Site visit: we check materials, fittings and condition – on site or by video. Fixed price: you receive services, intervals and price in writing. Start: a fixed team works at times when the rooms are not in use – in offices in the evening, in flats by arrangement.

What does professional descaling cost?

The hourly rate is the same at all our locations; travel time counts as working time. What differs because of water hardness is how often follow-up work is needed. Net guide values:

CityDeep clean bathroom and toilet (flat)Deep clean office washroom (4 toilets, 2 urinals)Routine care
Vienna1.5–3 h, approx. €75–1503–5 h, approx. €150–250from €41.20/h
Graz1.5–3 h, approx. €75–1503–5 h, approx. €150–250from €41.20/h, plan descaling more often
Linz1.5–3 h, approx. €75–1503–5 h, approx. €150–250from €41.20/h, plan descaling more often
Salzburg1.5–3 h, approx. €75–1503–5 h, approx. €150–250from €41.20/h, depending on supply zone
Example: office with four toilets and two urinals, urine scale not removed for months. About 4 hours × €50 = €200 net plus travel time for the deep clean. Afterwards descale weekly as part of routine cleaning so the effort is not repeated.

All details on the service are on our page sanitary cleaning Vienna and for Graz, Linz and Salzburg. In flats, bathroom descaling is part of our flat deep cleaning.

Typical mistakes

  • Acid on marble or natural stone: limestone and marble get etched and dull – irreparable without grinding.
  • Mixing acid and chlorine: life-threatening fumes. Never combine, not even one after the other.
  • Spraying dry grout: cement grout absorbs the acid and crumbles. Always pre-wet.
  • Scouring cream and steel wool: scratches in chrome, glass and ceramics hold limescale even better afterwards.
  • No contact time: scrubbing straight away uses strength and product without loosening the deposit.
  • Not rinsing: acid residues keep attacking metal and grout.
  • Only cleaning the visible rim: the urine scale under the rim and in the trap causes the smell.

Frequently asked questions about limescale and urine scale

What removes urine scale?

An acidic sanitary cleaner with enough contact time. Lower the water level in the toilet first so the product is not diluted, then loosen with a brush and rinse thoroughly. Professionals remove heavy, old urine scale with sanitary deep cleaners, often in two passes.

Does vinegar help against limescale?

Vinegar dissolves light limescale but smells strongly and can attack rubber seals and some metals. Citric acid dissolved in water is a milder alternative. Both are off limits on marble and natural stone.

Why does a clean toilet smell of urine?

Almost always because of urine scale under the rim, in the urinal trap or in the grout around the toilet. Surface wiping does not reach these spots.

How often should you descale?

It depends on water hardness: in Vienna usually every few weeks, in Graz and Linz rather weekly. Public and office toilets need urine scale removal as a fixed part of routine cleaning.

What does a sanitary deep clean cost?

One-off jobs from €50 net per hour according to effort plus travel time. Bathroom and toilet of a flat usually take 1.5 to 3 hours, an office washroom with four toilets and two urinals 3 to 5 hours. Routine cleaning from €41.20 net per hour.

Can acid be used on grout?

Only diluted, briefly and on pre-wetted grout, then rinse thoroughly. Undiluted acid on dry cement grout makes it crumble.
