Gutter cleaning in autumn: why it matters, how to do it safely and which mistakes get expensive. With checklist and guide prices for Austria.

Gutter cleaning with rope access – industrial climber from Bling Bling Premium Reinigung

When the trees are bare, the gutter is usually full: leaves, needles, moss, seeds and grit from the roof collect over the year and block both the gutter and the downpipe. By the first heavy rain or frost at the latest, this becomes a real problem. Here you will learn why gutter cleaning is not a luxury, how it is done properly, which costs are realistic and when you are better off leaving the ladder in the shed. You make the mess – we make it go away.

What does gutter cleaning involve?

The gutter – often called the rain gutter – collects water from the roof and channels it through the downpipe into the sewer, a soakaway or a rain barrel. For this to work, water must be able to flow freely with a slight fall towards the outlet. Gutter cleaning removes all deposits from the gutter, cleans the outlet and the leaf guard at the inlet and flushes the downpipe down to the ground connection.

What builds up depends on the location: in areas with deciduous trees it is mainly leaves and seeds, with conifers it is needles and cone scales, and in the city it is dust, soot and granules from roofing felt or tiles. Add to that moss washed off the roof and – especially in Vienna – pigeon droppings and nesting material. Over time all of this turns into dense, wet sludge in which even plants start to grow.

Why is cleaning the gutter so important?

A blocked gutter overflows when it rains. The water then does not go where it should but runs down the façade or drips in a concentrated stream next to the house. The consequences develop slowly but are expensive:

  • Damp façades: permanently wet render develops algae, green growth and spalling; inside, moisture can even lead to mould on walls.
  • Damage to the roof structure and eaves: if water backs up under the tiles, eaves boards and rafter ends get wet.
  • Wet basements and foundations: water seeping away directly beside the house puts strain on the basement waterproofing.
  • Frost damage: when water freezes in a full gutter it expands, bends gutter brackets and bursts soldered seams. Icicles and sheets of ice can fall.
  • Weight: wet leaves and ice are heavy. Brackets bend, the fall is lost – and the gutter clogs even faster.

For owners there is also liability: if sheets of ice or parts of the gutter fall onto a pavement, the person responsible for the building is generally liable. A well-maintained gutter is therefore also part of public safety.

When and how often should gutters be cleaned?

As a rule of thumb: at least once a year, better twice. The most important date is late autumn, once most of the leaves have fallen – in Austria usually between late October and early December, before the first frost. A second clean in spring removes blossom, seeds and whatever has collected over the winter.

  • Houses with large trees nearby: two to three times a year.
  • Flat roofs and internal gutters: at least twice a year, as standing water causes damage particularly quickly here.
  • Town houses without trees: once a year is often enough, provided no pigeons are nesting.
  • After storms: a quick visual check whether branches or hailstones are blocking the outlets.

How is a gutter cleaned properly?

The work itself is simple – the challenge is the height. Professionals therefore work with a ladder, an aerial work platform or rope access depending on the building. The process always follows the principle of top to bottom and away from the outlet towards the clean end:

  1. Visual inspection: check the condition of the gutter, brackets, soldered joints and downpipes. Loose parts are documented before work starts.
  2. Roof area above: remove coarse leaves and branches from the roof edge so nothing slides down again straight after cleaning.
  3. Remove coarse debris: with gloves or a gutter scoop, section by section, working away from the outlet. The material goes into a bucket or sack, not into the downpipe.
  4. Clean the leaf guard and outlet: take out the grille, clean it, put it back.
  5. Rinse: flush with water from the highest point towards the outlet. Fine sludge is loosened with a brush.
  6. Check the downpipe: test the flow; clear blockages in bends with a drain spiral or flushing hose. Check the ground connection or inspection opening.
  7. Fall and tightness: if water stands, the fall is wrong; if seams drip, soldered joints are leaking. Both are documented.
  8. Finish: clean the ground below the work area, dispose of green waste, hand over before-and-after photos.

Tools

Gutter scoop, work gloves, bucket with hook, garden hose with spray nozzle, drain spiral. Use pressure washers with care: too strong a jet can damage seals and force dirt under the tiles. Telescopic vacuum systems operated from the ground work for light, dry leaves but cannot cope with wet sludge.

Safety first

Falls from ladders are among the most common household accidents. If you clean yourself, place the ladder on firm, level ground at an angle of about 65 to 75 degrees, let it extend at least one metre above the support point and never lean out sideways – move it more often instead. A second person secures it at the bottom. From the first floor up, on steep roofs or in wet weather, professional equipment with fall protection is the right choice.

How we work together on gutter cleaning

In Vienna our team, with its own trained rope-access technicians, carries out gutter cleaning in Vienna – including on tall period buildings and in courtyards that no lifting platform can reach.

  1. Enquiry: the address, building height, approximate gutter length and a photo of the façade are enough to get started.
  2. Inspection: we check access, roof shape and the right technique – ladder, platform or rope access. You receive a first price in writing in advance.
  3. Fixed price: you get a quote with a fixed price including disposal and photo documentation.
  4. Start: our team cleans gutters and downpipes, tests the flow and reports damage before it gets worse.

How much does gutter cleaning cost?

Costs depend on gutter length, building height, how dirty it is and the access technique. A detached house often has 25 to 45 running metres of gutter. The following figures are non-binding market guide prices, net:

CityPrice per running metreDetached house (approx. 30–40 m)Tall buildings with platform/rope
Viennaapprox. €4–9approx. €180–380Flat rate after inspection
Grazapprox. €3.50–8approx. €160–350Flat rate after inspection
Linzapprox. €3.50–8approx. €160–350Flat rate after inspection
Salzburgapprox. €4–9approx. €180–390Flat rate after inspection

Typical market guide prices as of November 2026. Bling Bling Premium Reinigung offers gutter cleaning exclusively in Vienna, where we use our own rope-access technicians. One-off jobs are calculated from €50 net per hour plus travel or as a flat rate – the fixed price after inspection is binding.

Cost drivers are an aerial work platform (hire and no-parking zone), heavily silted or overgrown gutters, pigeon droppings that have to be removed hygienically, and repairs that require a tinsmith.

Prevention: fewer leaves, less effort

Dirt in the gutter cannot be avoided entirely, but it can be reduced considerably. Proven measures are leaf guards at the inlet of every downpipe, gutter guards or gutter brushes along the full length and regular pruning of branches that overhang the roof. Where pigeons sit on the roof edge, properly installed pigeon deterrents prevent droppings and nesting material from ending up in the gutter. A rainwater filter in the downpipe also makes sense if water is collected in a cistern or rain barrel – it holds back fine dirt and can be checked from the ground. And finally: put the cleaning date in your calendar. Cleaning at the same time every year prevents a solid layer of sludge from building up over several years.

Common mistakes in gutter cleaning

  • Flushing debris into the downpipe: washing leaves towards the outlet only moves the blockage into the pipe bend.
  • Cleaning too late: after the first frost the gutter is iced up – cleaning is then hardly possible and the damage is already happening.
  • An unsecured ladder: the wrong angle, soft ground or leaning out sideways are the classic causes of accidents.
  • Leaning on the gutter: gutters are not handholds; brackets bend and the fall is lost.
  • High pressure at close range: forces water under the tiles and damages seals.
  • Treating leaf guards as a free pass: grilles and brushes reduce the effort but do not replace inspection – fine dirt still collects underneath.
  • Ignoring damage: dripping seams or standing water should be repaired promptly, otherwise façade and timber damage follows.

Frequently asked questions

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At least once a year in late autumn, better twice – in autumn and in spring. More often if there are large trees nearby.

When is the best time for gutter cleaning?

When most of the leaves have fallen but before the first frost – in Austria usually between late October and early December.

How much does gutter cleaning cost for a detached house?

As a guide, costs are around €160 to €390 net, depending on the city, gutter length, height and level of dirt.

Can I clean the gutter myself?

For a single-storey bungalow with a stable ladder and a second person, yes. From the first floor up, on steep roofs or in wet weather, professionals with fall protection should take over.

How can I tell if a gutter is blocked?

Water overflows the edge when it rains, the downpipe gurgles or stays dry, plants grow out of the gutter or water marks appear on the façade.

Are leaf guards worth it?

They keep out coarse leaves and extend cleaning intervals but do not replace regular inspection. Fine dirt and seeds still collect.

Does Bling Bling clean gutters outside Vienna?

No. We offer gutter cleaning exclusively in Vienna, where we work with our own rope-access technicians.

Gutter full? We will get the leaves out.

Send us a photo of your façade and the approximate gutter length. Details of the service can be found under gutter cleaning. If the façade has already turned green, our façade cleaning helps; for flat roofs and terraces there is roof terrace cleaning.
