How often mowing happens is decided by the growth height, not the calendar
If more than a third of the blade length is taken off at once, the grass loses leaf mass that it needs for root formation: the surface goes yellow, opens up and is taken over by weeds and moss. In the main growing season that means shorter intervals, in high summer longer ones and a higher cutting height, because the soil then needs shade. A maintenance contract for a fixed number of visits rarely fits a year — our plan moves visits according to growth instead of working through them.
Thatch and moss are a soil problem, not a mowing problem
Beneath the green there is often a layer of thatch made up of dead blades and root remains; it takes up water but does not let it through to the soil, and moss establishes itself on top. What helps against that is scarifying in spring, when the lawn is in growth and the injury grows back over, followed by overseeding — in high summer or in wet conditions the same intervention is damage. Heavily walked, compacted areas also need aeration; anyone who only fertilises makes the problem worse.
Grounds maintenance stops at the tree
In Vienna, trees are protected under the Vienna Tree Protection Act from a trunk circumference of forty centimetres at a height of one metre: removal and major interventions require consent, and the other provinces have their own regulations. Cutting work on woody plants is described technically in ÖNORM L 1122; badly placed cuts let rot into the wood and make the tree a safety matter years later. We keep the green areas under maintenance and say in good time when a measure belongs to arboriculture.
